failure mode

The reason an asset fails to perform one or all of its primary functions, for example, if a fuel pump is leaking it cannot supply adequate amounts of fuel from the gas tank to the engine of the vehicle. Leaking would be one functional failure of the fuel pump. Other examples of failure modes are clogged filters, electrical issues, and broken motor.
